In an effort to provide our community with leading, accessible recreational opportunities, the City of Casper is reimagining Washington Park. Our goal is to offer amenities in line with national trends and local interests. It’s our vision that someday, not too long from now, Washington Park will become the recreational heart of Casper.
Plans and Timeline
Preliminary work on this project began in earnest in October 2022 with a public outreach campaign. Public meetings were held on October 27, 2022 and November 3, 2022 to discuss the proposed improvements at Washington Park. A public input survey was posted online, and it ran from October 24 until November 7, 2022. Survey responses were analyzed, and a summary of those results are posted (see below!).
In general, participants express overwhelming support for enhancements at the park, and there was no strong opposition to any of the recommended improvements. Among the highest ranked priorities identified by the public in both meetings and the survey were:
• Adding permanent restrooms
• Adding pickle ball courts
• Reconstructing Tennis Courts
• Renovating the bandshell
• Improving the pool/aquatics offerings
• Improving parking
Based on public feedback, available and committed funding—including federal support from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) — and the projected construction timeline, staff recommend phasing the Washington Park Revival Project as follows:
• Phase 1 – Baseball lighting replacements, tennis court reconstruction/expansion, pickleball court construction, parking improvements, and ADA restrooms.
• Phase 2 – Pool/aquatics improvements, Bandshell renovation, pathway/trail improvements, and parking lighting.
• Phase 3 – Inclusive playgrounds, fully inclusive restrooms (if not achieved in Phase 1), remaining baseball field enhancements, and other miscellaneous improvements supported by Casper citizens.
